  • Sarah’s Story

Sarah Elliot may only have three per cent vision in one eye, but that hasn’t stopped her pursuing her dream to become a chef. Today, Sarah is proud of her position as the first blind female Chef de Partie in New South Wales, working at Civic’s Nowra-based Kitchen & Catering social enterprise.

“Because I live with significant  vision impairment, many commercial kitchens didn’t want to support me. They didn’t see a future for a blind chef.”

That changed when Sarah met the team at Civic, where she was employed at Civic’s cafe in Nowra and supported to learn new skills in the kitchen. Not only is Sarah now a qualified chef, she’s also a qualified vocational educator teaching others with disability to cook at Civic Kitchen & Catering right here in the Shoalhaven.

” The Civic team  have given me the opportunity to grow professionally, really believe in myself, to build up my competence and to see my dreams come to life.”
