Counselling and the NDIS

Mental health plays a vital role in our overall wellbeing, yet for many people living with disability, accessing the right emotional and psychological support can be a challenge. The good news is, if you’re an NDIS participant, you may be eligible to receive counselling services funded through your NDIS plan.

Let’s take a closer look at what counselling services are, who they’re for and how they can make a difference in your life.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a professional, confidential service supporting you to talk openly about thoughts, feelings and challenges in a safe and supportive environment. Through counselling, you work with a trained therapist who listens without judgement and supports you to explore issues, set goals and develop strategies to improve your emotional wellbeing.

For some NDIS participants, counselling can support participants’ mental health and improve their participation in social, work and community life.

What can counselling help with?

Counselling can support a wide range of challenges and goals, including

  1. Managing anxiety, depression or stress
  2. Coping with grief, trauma or loss
  3. Building confidence and emotional resilience
  4. Improving communication and relationships
  5. Navigating social isolation
  6. Setting personal goals and making positive life changes

Who can access counselling through the NDIS?

If you have an NDIS plan with funding under Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living, you may be able to use that funding to access counselling. This applies whether your plan is self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed. If your plan is Agency-managed your counselling will need to be delivered by an NDIS-registered provider like Civic.

Your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager can help you find a registered counsellor who suits your needs and goals.

How to get started

  1. Check your NDIS plan to see if you have “Improved Daily Living” funding.
  2. Ask your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager for help connecting with a registered counselling provider.
  3. Reach out directly to a provider to discuss your needs and book a session.

Accessing counselling through the NDIS can support you to address feelings of anxiety, sadness and overwhelm. But it can also support you to build your confidence and independence, leading to better outcomes across all areas of your life.

Whether you’re working through something difficult or simply looking for a safe space to be heard and supported, finding the right counselling service can be a powerful step forward.
