Civic supports the opening of Sutherland Shire’s largest all-abilities playground

Civic was honoured to support the opening of Sutherland Shire’s largest all-abilities playground earlier this week, which was officially unveiled on Tuesday 25 June by Minister of Sport, Steve Camper, Minister for Heathcote, Maryanne Stewart and Sutherland Shire Mayor, Carmelo Pesce.

Located in Cooper Street Reserve, Engadine, the reserve is now home to an active sports youth precinct and an all-abilities playground, providing accessible play opportunities to the whole community.

The playground includes synthetic softfall for wheelchair access, accessible play equipment and connecting pathways. There are also communication boards to support sight-impaired and non-verbal visitors, a wheelchair accessible tree-top pathway, braille signage, wheelchair-friendly slides, trampoline, swings and carousel, as well as sensory vegetation.

The all-abilities playground is part of a major $3.2m park upgrade that also included the development of a pump track, skate park, Parkour facilities and a Basketball court, following two years of community consultation.

Hundreds of community members, including skaters, scooter riders and basketball players, descended on the Reserve to see the new facilities and mark the official opening. Civic’s Kitchen & Catering social enterprise was on hand to cater the event, providing delicious slices to all the visitors as well as hot drinks from the coffee cart.

We congratulate Council and all their partners on their vision for an accessible space and look forward to enjoying the facilities.

The reserve is located at Cooper Street Reserve, Old Princes Highway, and Railway Parade, Engadine NSW 2233. More information on the Reserve and its accessible facilities can be found here.
